Book Design: Constructing Abstractions

Martin Puryear is a sculptor whose work revolves around taking everyday objects and creating abstract representations of them. I had to design and build a book that cataloged a variety of his works. “Big Bling”, one Puryear’s most well-known works, spans the front and back cover of my book and gives the reader a taste of to expect. I wanted to let the artist’s work speak for itself, so typography and design work are used purely for organization and kept in black/white. The interior spreads largely rely on Puryear’s intricate sculptures to add visual interest. The few colored images included are emphasized due to the majority of the design being in grayscale. Additionally, chapter openings display a cropped view of some of his works. This further abstracts the piece and entices readers to explore further.
